Hey There

A great song adds to a great story.  This site is dedicated to the song, 不逾 (Not Exceeding / Not Overstepping Boundaries), from 长月烬明 (Till the End of the Moon).

A bit of background

Similar to how someone writing a term paper wouldn't sound the same way as if he were speaking to a friend, written materials tend to be more formal.  Although still English, reading Shakespeare is drastically different than reading a newspaper.  In between, there is context, space and time differences, word plays, double meanings, 4 character idioms (Chengyu), and hidden, implied, or completely ommitted pronouns and subjects.  Similar to reading a poem versus reading a letter, the poem will have more room for interpretation.

Anyway, a very beautiful song just to listen to, even without the words. But after getting to know the lyrics a little better, there's even more appreciation. The singers really captured the essence of the song and the storyline of the drama series. The song and lyrics are structured and arranged incredibly, depicting the couple's journey and progression.  The way the lyrics are broken up between the singers, and how they come together, and sing together at the end.  I think only the original lyrics can do this song any kind of justice.  The choice of words is on point. Maybe one day I will learn to sing the song.  For today, I will just try to focus on the meaning; take the lyrics, apply Cantonese pronunciations, and try to translate to English. Some lines contain multiple English translations, ranging from closer to the literal Chinese, then to more interpreted, but hopefully, closer context. Still rough, but hopefully you can get the gist! The Cantonese is one-to-one pronunciation, but the same words won't necessarily sound great in another dialect.  (It's just that, in order to learn a song, we need to know the meaning.)  There's a lot of more distance between English and Chinese, so the translation could not always be one-to-one, word for word, but I'll try to capture some of the imageries, metaphors, and meanings,  and supplement with explanations.   But please keep in mind that I am just a fan and an ABC, so please apply immortal forgiveness, and help if you can!  I suggest trying to follow along with the song, as the singers really made the lyrics come to life.
